York Guildhall Orchestra
Elgar – Cockaigne Overture
Sibelius – Symphony No.4
Rachmaninov – Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini (soloist Peter Donohoe)
Rimsky Korsakov – Capriccio Español
In our second concert of the season, we welcome back Peter Donohoe in a superb showpiece for piano and Orchestra. Rachmaninov like many composers admired the popular 24th Caprice for solo violin by Paganini - to the extent that he decided to write his own version of the work for full orchestra and piano. It is full of the sprightly flights of notes that everyone knows from the original, but converted into something that is unmistakably Rachmaninov – including his famous Dies Irae theme.
The orchestra continues its journey through the major compositions of Jean Sibelius, this time it is his fourth symphony, perhaps one of his darker works. To end the concert we will all let our hair down in the brilliant orchestral showpiece by Rimsky-Korsakov that will feature Fiona Love, the orchestra’s leader, in the solo violin part of Capriccio Español.
